NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Devonne Richardson of the Goldey-Beacom College women’s basketball team has earned her second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rookie of the week honor this season while her teammate, Jacinda Jones and Kyle White of the men’s basketball team both earned honorable mention for the week ending Feb. 7.
Richardson, a Baltimore, Md. native, helped the Lightning women to a 2-0 week with averages of 16.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per-game. She shot 47.8 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. She posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the win against Chestnut Hill College, and followed up that performance with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a win over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
A 5-8 forward out of Millford Mill Academy, Richardson has earned this distinction twice this year, with the other honor coming on Dec. 7. She has also earned honorable mention once this season on Jan. 19.
Jones, a redshirt-sophomore guard from Claymont, Del., averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per-game to lead the Lightning. Against CHC, she led all scorers with 20 points and pitched in five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
The team’s leading scorer with 15.8 ppg, Jones has now earned honorable mention three times this season, to go with one player of the week laurel on Jan. 4.
White carried his team in a 1-1 week for GBC that saw the Lightning lose to Chestnut Hill, 82-70 early in the week, but regroup and defeat USP, 71-63 two days later. The 5-10 senior guard from Georgetown, Del. posted 27.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per-game. Against CHC, he scored 24 points which included a perfect 11-of-11 shooting from the foul line. Then, he scored a career-high 31 points to lead his team to victory against USP on 12-for-15 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 from the line.
A second-year transfer from Delaware State, White has now earned honorable mention from the CACC two consecutive weeks to go with three player of the week awards.
The Lightning men and women’s basketball teams are back in action on Tues. night as they visit cross-town rival, Wilmington University for a CACC doubleheader.
