Rocio Cabanillas Moreno Earns GBC Athletics Female Newcomer of the Year Award

Junior Transfer Helped Lightning Earn NCAA Regional Berth



WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) of the women's tennis team has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Goldey-Beacom College Department of Athletics Female Newcomer of the Year Award, it has been announced by Director of Athletics Chuck Hammond.

The award, which will be presented on a yearly basis, is voted upon by members of the Department of Athletics in addition to Goldey-Beacom head coaches.

A first-year player for Coach Joe Kissel, Cabanillas Moreno earned first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honors after helping the Lightning to a school-record 14 wins. Playing primarily as the Lightning's No. 2 singles player, she posted a 13-5 singles record, including a 12-4 mark at the No. 2 position.

In addition, she compiled a 14-6 doubles mark that included an 8-2 mark at No. 2 doubles with sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal).

Cabanillas Moreno, who won 8 of her first 10 singles matches, helped the Lightning reach the NCAA East Regional Championship for the third time in the last four years.
