An outstanding week for Goldey-Beacom was award worthy with freshman Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) being picked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week and both sophomore Omar Hernandez (West Grove, PA) and freshman Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) named to the league's Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll.

Van Zanten advanced to the "B" flight singles final over the weekend at the ITA East Regional Championship.  She defeated two CACC opponents in the process, upending Hayley Craskey from Chestnut Hill, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and Axe Owens from Chestnut Hill, 6-1, in the semifinals.  It concluded a 6-1 week for her as she topped Jacqueline Clyne of Holy Family, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles in regular-season play.

Van Zanten now is 8-1 on the young season at singles and 3-1 at doubles for the Lightning, who closed last season ranked 31st in the country and won an NCAA Tournament match for the first time in school history.

Hernandez scored Goldey-Beacom's biggest goal of the season to date, finding the back of the net 6:22 into the second overtime to give his squad a huge 2-1 victory at Caldwell.  It was Hernandez' first goal of the season and sixth career.

Aghrim assisted on both goals in the match and he now is tied for second on the squad with four points.  He fed a corner kick to junior Olof Tapper (Linkoping, Sweden) for the first goal with 32 seconds left in the first half and a 1-1 draw before getting the helper on Hernandez' winner.

The Lightning (2-4, 2-2 CACC) are tied for third place in the league with Wilmington, just one point out of first.

The women's tennis squad is home Thursday against Concordia (NY) at 3:30 pm in a rematch of last year's conference final.  The men's soccer team is home Saturday against Post at 4:00 pm.
