Men's Cross Country | 10/19/2017 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom's men's cross country team saw its overall dedication to teamwork, comradery and community service recognized as the winner of their sport's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Sportsmanship Award.

The squad under second-year coach Andrew Shearer has become one of the most liked in the area and on campus.  The unit picked up the well-deserved award thanks to its accomplishments on and off the course.

On the course, the squad recorded third-place finishes September 22 at the GBC Fall Classic and October 7 at the CNU Invitational.  One of the many bright spots for the unit has been junior Jono Hooper (Brisbane, Australia), who has closed in the top 20 in four of his five races this year, including a third-place showing at the GBC Fall Classic.

Off the beaten path, the harriers have participated in Soles4Souls to help fight poverty.  Along with the women's team, the squad collected shoes given to the worthwhile charity with collection boxes set around various points on campus.

The season is far from done for the Lightning as the CACC Championships take place Sunday at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark with GBC serving as the host.  The men's race starts at 9:30 am and the women go at 10:30 am.

This marks the third consecutive academic year a Goldey-Beacom squad has taken home the Sportsmanship Award for its unit.  The baseball squad won last spring and the softball team won in 2016.  The men's soccer team also won three straight years from 2010-12.
