The first week of competition for Goldey-Beacom Athletics was an impressive one with five student-athletes gaining weekly honors from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The women's soccer team saw junior Marta Lopez (Valencia, Spain) named Goalkeeper of the Week with senior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) and freshman Taylor Owen (East Pennsboro, PA) picked to the Weekly Honor Roll.  Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) was named Volleyball's Rookie of the Week and freshman Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) was tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll.

Lopez went 2-0 last week with a shutout in her first week for the Lightning.  She made three saves Friday in a 1-0 victory over Bloomfield and then had four in a 3-2 win Sunday vs. Roberts Wesleyan.

Runciman, a second-team all-league pick a season ago, on Sunday picked up where she left off with a goal and an assist.  She assisted on Owen's goal that forged a 1-1 tie and then converted a penalty kick for a 2-2 score.

Runciman is fifth in school history with 20 goals, second with 26 assists and fourth with 66 points.

Owen on Sunday had the aforementioned goal and added an assist.  She netted a 15-yard shot early in the second half for a 1-1 tie and then assisted on the go-ahead goal from senior Elena Power (Glassboro, NJ) in the 80th minute to keep the Lightning undefeated (2-0).

Haley made a more than impressive debut last weekend at Ramfest in West Chester, closing with 63 kills, 56 digs, a .213 hitting percentage and three double-doubles over four matches.  She had 16 kills and 16 digs Friday against Millersville, 21 and 19 Saturday vs. Franklin Pierce along with 11 and 16 at West Chester.  Haley also had 15 kills and a .379 percentage Friday vs. Salem International.

Varela announced his presence Sunday, blasting home a 15-yard shot in the 68th minute to give Goldey-Beacom (1-1) the lead for good in a 5-2 win over Bloomsburg.

The women's soccer team is on the road Wednesday at 7:00 pm at East Stroudsburg, the men are home Thursday at 4:00 pm vs. Pittsburgh-Johnstown and volleyball next Tuesday is at East Stroudsburg.
