Goldey-Beacom College Athletics Excels in the NCAA Academic Success Rate

11/30/2020 12:00:00 AM

The recently released Academic Success Rate by the NCAA once again shows the outstanding achievement of Goldey-Beacom College's student-athletes.

The ASR and the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) are metrics that NCAA Division II colleges use to measure the retention, persistence and graduation of student-athletes.  The ASR typically is seen as a more accurate representation of academic success, since the FGR only includes scholarship athletes who began their enrollment at the College as freshmen.  Whereas the ASR includes all student-athletes, including transfers who leave the College in good academic standing.

"With the release of the most recent ASR data, the effort put forth by our student-athletes, faculty and staff shine through yet again," Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Brennan said.  "The Athletic Department is proud of all of its student-athletes for their outstanding achievement and grateful for the dedication of all faculty and staff for their dedication."

By the Numbers
  • The Lightning continue to exceed the national average by an impressive 12-point margin with an ASR of 86 percent.  Goldey-Beacom ended tied for 66th in the country out of 316 Division II schools.
  • The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) ASR closed at 82 percent, fourth best among Division II conferences.  GBC ranks sixth among CACC institutions.
  • Baseball, men's golf, women's tennis and women's cross country/track & field all achieved ASRs of 100 percent, ending tied for third in the CACC with four programs.
  • Goldey-Beacom student-athletes also exceed the national average for FGR in Division II by seven points with a 69 percent rating.
  • Goldey-Beacom student-athletes achieved a 3.18 cumulative GPA in 2019-20.
  • Forty-eight for the Lightning made the 2019-20 CACC Academic Honor Roll.
  • Three student-athletes were tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District.  Goldey-Beacom has seen 19 student-athletes achieve this distinction all-time, with 15 occurring over the previous six academic years.
  • Two student-athletes took home the CACC Top XVI Award for having the top GPA at the finals site of each conference championship.
  • GBC ranked seventh out of 14 CACC schools with 10 teams who recorded at least a 3.0 GPA.

"Time and again, we have found that participation in collegiate athletics is beneficial in so many ways for the student-athlete and the College," Goldey-Beacom College President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith said.  "Our student-athletes perform well in the classroom, develop time management skills, are motivated to complete their degrees and build life-long bonds with their teammates and coaches.  They find the right balance between athletics and academics, which I think is the key to their success at GBC."

"The athletic department is very proud of our academic success," Assistant Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator/Women's Basketball Coach Bethann Burke said.  "It truly is a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, the recruiting by our coaches and the support from our faculty."
