GBC Athletics Leadership Academy Takes a Deep Dive into Emotional Intelligence

3/17/2021 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom's Department of Athletics latest roundtable involving the Leadership Academy took a look at emotional intelligence with a discussion and insights given by GBC Management Professor Dr. Nicole Evans.

"I am glad that we had a nice turnout to discuss emotional intelligence (EQ) with the Athletic Leadership Academy students," Dr. Evans said.  "My goal was to provide the athletes with effective leadership tools and techniques.  EQ is an essential skill when playing team sports and will also benefit the athletes in life after they have graduated and begin their careers."

Dr. Evans looked at many different aspects of emotional intelligence (commonly referred to as EQ) and how they affect everyday life.  She looked at IQ versus EQ, best practices and self assessment along with discussing several takeaways from the discussion.

Emotional intelligence can have a great positive affect on one's health, both mental and physical.  Dr. Evans discussed all of the qualities involving EQ and how each play a huge role in our day-to-day actions.

Dr. Evans also delved into how we handle emotions for the aspects of identifying, harnessing and managing.  She also discussed with the student-athletes self-recognition, self-management, relationships and social understanding when dealing with emotional intelligence.

"I thought the power point presentation was very good and the dialogue we discussed is crucial," Goldey-Beacom baseball junior Trevor Jump said.  "The topic of emotional intelligence is something we aren't taught at any level of education, usually only in experiences do we learn this so it was really beneficial for us to get ahead of the ball.  I thought the conversation fit well with athletics, life and COVID issues we are having on campus.  Making good decision is a part of emotional intelligence and it was good to cover all the aspects of emotional intelligence."

The Leadership Academy sees all programming targeted to address the qualities possessed by strong leaders including strong communication, self-awareness, gratitude, learning, influence, empathy, courage and respect.
