Student-Athletes Recognized by Goldey-Beacom College With Honors Day Awards

5/17/2021 12:00:00 AM

As we get things back to normal, one thing that continues to be a tradition at Goldey-Beacom College is Honors Day and with it once again came the honoring of student-athletes as 12 were bestowed awards based on their continued academic prowess.

"Our athletes do typically shine bright on Honors Day, but this year seemed to be a bit brighter," Associate Athletic Director Jeremy Benoit said. "Last year's celebration, like many others, was held virtually.  This year's Honors Day was the first significant non-athletic event that we have been able to hold in-person, which made all of our student-athletes' phenomenal achievements that much more special."

This annual ceremony honors the elite students in each of the College's academic programs, as well as those who have displayed exceptional service to the GBC and outside communities.  These 12 student-athletes received various awards based on the standout work in their majors.

Among the elite on this list include Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE), who has been an exemplarily student-athlete for both the women's soccer and women's basketball teams.  A gifted competitor and one of the College's hardest working students, she is tied for sixth in women's soccer history with 27 goals, seventh outright with 63 points and is a two-time first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick.

Senior Cara Jones (Wilmington, DE) has been an incredibly valuable member of both the women's cross country and women's track & field teams with her athletic ability and leadership skills.  A tremendous and well-like student-athlete, she has competed in 18 of the team's 19 cross country events and played a big role in the school transitioning into the debut of track & field in 2018-19.
