Goldey-Beacom Tabs Steve Golt as its New Men’s Golf Coach

7/14/2021 12:00:00 AM

Steve Golt, who enters with a wealth of knowledge and expertise on the local level, was tabbed as the next head coach for a Goldey-Beacom men's golf team that enters the 2021-22 season with potential marked unlimited.

"I am pleased to announce the addition of Steve Golt as our next Head Men's Golf Coach," Director of Athletics Dr. Thomas Brennan said. "Our Men's Golf program has one of the most substantial winning traditions as exists at GBC.  I believe his skillset, knowledge and personality are what will continue building the team into a top-tier program in the East Region."

Golt last year served as head coach at Saint Mark's High School in Wilmington, his alma mater, after being the program's assistant coach the previous two campaigns.  The 2020-21 season witnessed the Spartans going 6-0-1 over their last seven matches to end the season 9-4-1, their best record since 2009.  Saint Mark's sent six of its eight golfers to the Delaware state tournament with Will Ralsten ending 38th out of 94 players.

Prior to that, Golt was the head coach at Delaware Military Academy in Wilmington from 2008-13, compiling a 48-48 record.  He also was the softball coach at DMA from 2014-15.

Golt since 2003 has served as a golf instructor, obtaining a Level II teaching certificate that year with the United States Golf Teaching Federation.  He won club championships in 2003 at Back Creek Golf Club, in 2004 at Frog Hollow Golf Club and in 2009 at Deerfield Golf Club.  He also has participated in the Delaware Amateur Championship and the Delaware Open Championship.

"Coach Golt's success as a high school boys' golf coach, especially most recently at Saint Mark's, made him an exciting prospect right away," Associate Athletic Director and soon-to-be Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit adds.  "He clearly has a bit of talent in the world of golf but, most importantly, his personality meshes perfectly with our guys.  I look forward to seeing his leadership take this already incredibly talented roster to unprecedented heights."

"I've coached high school golf for nine seasons and have been patiently waiting for an opportunity to coach at the collegiate level," Golt said.  "I was recently given that opportunity at Goldey-Beacom College and I'm excited to accept the position as Head Golf Coach.  The staff at GBC is invested in their sports programs and I'm anxious to set a new standard with the golf team.  Our preparation, attitude and effort will be on display each day as we set our goals to compete and be successful at the highest level.  Thank you GBC for the opportunity and I look forward to being the best coach and mentor that I can be.  Go Lightning!!!"

Golt walks into a perfect situation with an already successful program looking to take the next step.  Ranked ninth in the East Region with just four competing players a season ago, the Lightning won the Griffin Invitational with 641, ended third at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship with 311 and were tied for sixth at the Mike Bello Invitational with 616.  The final round at the Bello Invitational saw them card a season-best 305.

Included in that mix is freshman Hunter McGee (Carp, ON), who was named the CACC Player of the Year.  Establishing himself as one of the area's most dominant players, he recorded victories at the Griffin Invitational with 148 and at the Mike Bello Invitational with 139.  McGee followed that by ending third at the CACC Championship with 73.

McGee closed the regular season ranked first in the East Region, according to GolfStat, with a 73.86 average.

Freshman Pablo Saenz Avila (Bogota, Colombia) also made headways in also being named to the All-CACC Team.  He notched a pair of top-20 finishes, closing tied for fifth at the Griffin Invitational 159 that included a final-round 77 and 11th at the CACC Championship with 80.

It was the second straight year both players were tabbed All-CACC.  Both also were named to the league's Academic Honor Roll.
