Goldey-Beacom Gets 45 Student-Athletes Named for the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Awards

8/5/2021 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom again demonstrated its high level of excellence in the classroom with 45 student-athletes presented a Division II Academic Achievement Award by the Athletic Director Association.

The award goes to a student-athlete in the 2020-21 academic year who recorded at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, has completed at least four semesters at that school.

"Our tremendous athletes also tend to be tremendous students," Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit said. "You see that a lot in Athletic Departments around the country and GBC is no exception.  Many of the time-management, attention-to-detail and team-building skills they foster, simply from being an athlete, translate rather well to academia.  It also helps that our coaches are what I like to refer to as, 'Academically Intrusive', which is a fancy way of saying they go out of their way to ensure their athletes' success in the classroom as opposed to simply being reactive. Our Associate AD Bethann Burke manages that part of the house for GBC Athletics and the students' success is also a testament to her own hard work and diligence."

"The academic success of our student-athletes is a source of pride for our college community," said Burke, who also is the College's Senior Woman Administrator and women's basketball coach.  "It starts with the recruitment of tremendous student-athletes with high character, who received great support while here at Goldey-Beacom College.  These students have shown dedication and commitment to their studies during a year that wasn't easy to be a student, navigating an ever-changing world due to covid."

Women's soccer paced all of the Lightning's teams with eight being honored and that includes senior Line Kristoffersen (Bergen, Norway), a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.  Another key member from the women's side is volleyball senior Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ), who also was twice picked CoSIDA Academic All-District.

Also making a notable appearance is junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD), who last spring was tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District.  He is the 20th so honored in school history and played a key role in helping the baseball team, in just its fifth season, reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

The softball and baseball teams each were tied for second at the College with seven student-athletes picked.  Women's basketball, women's tennis and volleyball were next with five apiece.

The 45 student-athletes also marks the same number Goldey-Beacom had picked to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll.
