Women’s Tennis Announces 2023 Spring Schedule

1/31/2023 12:00:00 AM

(2023 spring schedule)

Goldey-Beacom's women's tennis team looks to parlay the success it had with many newcomers into a solid spring against a strong schedule, which the team announced.

The squad opens things February 17 against Division I Delaware, more than a month before its next match March 23 at West Chester.  GBC ends the month with the match on the 30th at Millersville.

Goldey-Beacom is back home April 2 against Indiana (PA) before road matches on the 10th at Saint Thomas Aquinas and two days later at the District of Columbia.  The team ends the academic year with matches at Delcastle Tennis Center on the 15th versus Slippery Rock and the 22nd against Queens (NY).

Sophomore Elizabeth Mova (Sevastopol, Ukraine) competed at No. 1 singles in nine of the squad's 10 fall matches and played solidly against some of the area's top competitors.  She played No. 1 doubles in all 10 matches with junior Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela), notching five victories that included wins in three of the first four matches.

Bruno, a two-time member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll, has notched 29 career doubles victories and has shown great determination her entire time with the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.  She is the lone player remaining from the 2018-19 squad that advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Zehra Canbaz (Denizli, Turkey) made a more than impressive impact both at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles.  She amassed four singles triumphs that included three straight to end the fall.  Canbaz also paired with freshman Hannah Brandl (Neufeld, Austria) to win their last three doubles matches.
