Sarah Round (Northampton, England), as sound a student-athlete, teammate and employee as one could ask, has been named Goldey-Beacom's nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.

"We are proud to present Sarah as our nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year," Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit said.  "She overcame a great deal of adversity throughout her time at Goldey-Beacom and continues to be a shining light.  She has been a pleasure to watch as an athlete, student and member of the Lightning family."

"Sarah was a pleasure to coach and also one of the best teammates that I have been around," Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator/Women's Basketball Coach Bethann Burke said.  "She is the type of person who makes others around her better and everyone always enjoyed playing with her.  Sarah is caring, hardworking and always displayed great sportsmanship.  She is a leader and is respected by her peers. Even though she did not play on the court this season, she still played a big role in supporting our team and helping make her teammates better every day.  She continued to lead by example and was always there to provide encouragement to her teammates."

"I can not think of a better nominee for this award than Sarah," Sports Information Coordinator Derek Crudele said.  "This office, like the Department of Athletics, strives for excellence and helping make sure we stick to the ultimate goal in all of athletics of putting the student-athlete first.  Sarah has shown impeccable leadership skills her entire time at the College and that has continued into this office.  She has picked up so much awareness, has been there for our student-athletes and I have zero doubt she will succeed in any leadership role any place and any time.  I am beyond happy for Sarah and this is just the beginning."

Round now goes into the pool of other nominees from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and the league will decide which student-athlete goes forward to the national committee.  The NCAA, usually in August, announces the conference winners.

Round's unfinished journey through Goldey-Beacom's Department of Athletics has many layers, which began during her time with the women's basketball team.  A gifted athlete with outstanding shooting and passing skills who made everyone around her better, Round started all 72 games she competed over three seasons and played a big role in the team's history.

That mark began during her freshman season, when Goldey-Beacom clinched a spot in the CACC Tournament on the final day of the campaign before stunning North Division-champion Dominican (NY) in the quarterfinals.  Round ended that season with 74 three-pointers for the second-best mark in team history.

She graduated fourth in school history with 167 three-pointers and 15th (now 16th) with 779 career points.

A two-time member of the CACC Academic Honor Roll, Round made the President's List in seven semesters, was the GBC 2021 Female Student-Athlete President's Award winner, the 2022 GBC Lewis Award winner, an inductee both of Chi Alpha Sigma and the Alpha Chi Honor Society and a five-time pick to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll.

Round's role off campus includes working since 2020 with the Center for Grief and Trauma Therapy.  After starting as an Office Assistant, her upgraded duty now as a Clinical Intern includes conducting individual therapy with a range of ages and using knowledge of psychology and psychopathology to best serve clients.  She also has completed online trainings as part of ongoing training in grief, grief therapy and other related topics.  Round also engages in community outreach and group development in collaboration with other clinicians.

Prior duties on campus included serving one year as a Student Intern in the College's International Admissions Office and two years as a Resident Assistant in the College's Office of Residence Life.

Round is going into her second year as the College's Graduate Assistant Sports Information Coordinator.  There, she helps with the office's day-to-day operations that include creating graphics for all social media, assisting in the constant updating of the Athletics website, working a variety of Athletics events in which leadership roles are plenty, collaborating on projects for special events in the department, maintaining all efforts in helping preserve and enhance the department's history and assisting the student-athletes continuing to prepare for the real world.

A record 619 female student-athletes were nominated by NCAA member schools for the award.  Since 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership throughout their college careers.
