1/4/2024 12:00:00 AM

The prestigious College Sports Communicators Academic All-District were announced for the soccer and volleyball teams with Goldey-Beacom getting eight student-athletes selected.

Alex Lowry (Wenonah, NJ), fellow junior Lexi Coppola (Turnersville, NJ), junior Alexa Pacheco (Santo Domingo, DR) and sophomore Mariah McQueen (Baltimore, MD) were honored for women's soccer, Megan Chesser (Grove City, OH) and fellow sophomore Kyla Campbell (Altoona, PA) were named for volleyball with Cameron Michalak (Elkton, MD) and fellow junior Henry Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) honored for men's soccer.

Lowry got her third nod to this list, along with her pick last spring from the softball team.  Coppola, Pacheco and Michalak all made the list a second time.  All honored already were named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Lowry has been the model student-athlete in her two years with the soccer and softball teams, consistently showing outstanding play, displaying the likeability that has made her a great teammate and demonstrating the leadership that makes her like a coach on the field.  One of the top students at the College, Lowry was one of four for GBC to start all 17 games and made an emergency start at goalkeeper at Chestnut Hill in which she notched eight saves and was tabbed CACC Goalkeeper of the Week.

Coppola played in 13 games with 12 starts and was part of a defense that allowed just 24 goals over 17 games and without a goal in the first half on 12 occasions.  Pacheco started all 17 contests, giving the unit solid play in a year which she closed with two goals and two assists.  McQueen competed in 17 games with seven starts, ending 17th in the CACC with four goals and 29th with nine points.

Women's Soccer this season reached double figures in results for the seventh consecutive year.

Chesser this season saw her impact explode at middle blocker, giving the Lightning solid play at the net in all facets and coupling that with one of the area's best serves.  A tremendous athlete who is someone GBC can build around the next two years, Chesser ended 37th in the country with 0.51 aces per set (ninth in the CACC), 20th in the league with 33 aces and 40th with 29 blocks.

Campbell received a bump in her play at middle blocker, starting all 20 of the squad's matches and making herself more of a factor as the Lightning continue to build.  She notched six kills and a .500 hitting percentage September 9 against Virginia Union, five block assists November 4 at Bridgeport and four digs September 19 vs. Chestnut Hill.

Michalak made his imminent way into the starting lineup this season and that resulted in continued solid play on defense that also saw him contribute two goals on the year.  He has played in 38 games with 27 starts over his three campaigns, including 18 and 17 this season.

Lidstrom also played in 18 games with 17 starts on the season, again giving the Lightning strong continuity on defense that gives the program plenty of hope for the next two seasons.

Men's Soccer rallied from a zero-win season in 2022 and picked to end 11th in the 2023 preseason coaches poll to close eighth and make the CACC quarterfinals.  GBC ended the regular season with five results in its last eight league contests and overall amassed eight multi-goal games.
