6/4/2024 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom senior Ashwin Jood (Pretoria, South Africa), the first track & field All-America in the College's history, today was named United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association East Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year.

Jood put himself in the Lightning's history books by ending seventh in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Track & Field Championships.  He got off to a great start during the race in Emporia, KS and closed in 47.38 seconds.

The trip to the final was an unexpected one by anyone's standard.  Jood started things by sprinting 46.665 seconds May 23 in his qualifying race, resulting in a tie for the eighth and ultimate spot in the final.  He and Prince Griffin from Northwest Missouri State then had a runoff the next day in which Jood won by almost a second, running in 46.75 seconds.

In Goldey-Beacom's fifth competitive season, Jood was the first to compete at the NCAA Championships.  It was Jood's second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships in this event, ending sixth in 46.43 seconds for Carson-Newman University.

Jood entered the week owning the nation's fourth-best time in the 400-meter dash, racing 46.04 seconds April 12 at the Larry Ellis Invitational.  He also was 23rd in the 200-meter dash, owning a time of 20.96 seconds from March 22 at the Stockton Invitational.

Jood did a lot of winning this season, 11 times capturing first place that included twice at the CACC Championships.  He was victorious in the 200-meter dash in 21.13 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 46.77 seconds, becoming the Lightning's first to win multiple conference titles in the same year.

The conference event also was the fourth time this season Jood had multiple victories in the same meet.

Those points Jood produced were huge for Goldey-Beacom, which closed third at the CACC Championships for the squad's best finish in just its fifth season.  He also produced half of the Lightning's victories at the conference meet with Kosiani Dunkley (Kingston, Jamaica) winning the 800-meter run and fellow junior Dev Napier (Hagerstown, MD) taking the 100-meter dash.

Jood's efforts helped him to be named the College's Male Athlete of the Year.
