Yusef Shakur Accepted to Participate in Fellowship Program

4/30/2025 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom Cross Country/Track & Field senior Yusef Shakur (Townsend, DE) has been accepted to participate in the 2025-2026 Transform Mid-Atlantic Civic Fellowship program.

Participation in this fellowship provides students from the region high impact opportunities to develop their leadership skills and understanding of civic and community engagement.  This will allow them to better serve as leaders in their communities and collectively create solutions to our region's most urgent problems.

"Yusef has been a tremendous runner for us in both Cross Country and Track & Field, providing great depth for both programs," Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit said. "His additional contributions to the College, primarily in his role as President of the Black Student Union, have expanded his leadership opportunities and made him very marketable to employers as he begins to transition to his post-undergraduate life.  Being accepted into this fellowship program certainly can be attributed to his hard work and dedication to his holistic education.  He will be a tremendous asset to Transform Mid-Atlantic."

"I would love to congratulate Yusef on his fellowship," Goldey-Beacom Cross Country/Track & Field coach Joe Dare said.  "I am very proud of him and of his hard work.  He is one of the hardest workers on campus and finds time to participate in multiple clubs/organizations even after being a multi-sport athlete here at GBC.  This fellowship is just the beginning of more great things to come for Yusef."

"The fellowship brings together 15 student leaders nominated by their institution's President who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civic and community engagement," Shakur said. "Being selected for this fellowship allows me to connect with like-minded peers who are equally passionate about creating positive change in their communities.  It also offers a unique opportunity to build a powerful network not only with current fellows, but also with inspiring alumni such as Sulakshmi Vaid (GBC Coordinator for Civic and Community Service) who continue to make meaningful impacts beyond their time in the program."

One of the squad's top distance runners, Shakur twice ended second this spring in the steeplechase.  This occurred in 11:14.57 at the Delaware Invitational and in 11:15.23 at the Purple & Gold Open.  During the cross country season, he ended 19th at the Golden Ram Invitational.

Goldey-Beacom's men's cross country team last fall closed fourth at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship after ending third in 2023.  Its men's track & field squad ended third last spring, the best finish in school history.

Goldey-Beacom from May 2-3 will compete at the CACC Championships in Lakewood, NJ.
