Baseball Sees Four Tabbed on the Watch List by Collegiate Baseball

3/2/2021 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom's baseball squad got its 2021 season off on a good note with four of its student-athletes placed on the Watch List in Division II according to Collegiate Baseball.

Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD), Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) and fellow sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) all were named Players to Watch with freshman Tommy Federici (Swoyersville, PA) picked a Newcomer to Watch.

Heskett in last year's aborted season once again showed his worth for the Lightning over the four games he started.  He ended tied for first in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with two wins, seventh with 19 innings pitched and 12th with 17 strikeouts.  This included notching six strikeouts at Limestone over four innings and five strikeouts against Millersville over five innings.

His original sophomore year of 2019 saw him end sixth in the league with two complete games and 15th with a .215 batting average against.

Maxwell once again will be counted on as one of the Lightning's top infielders.  Over 17 games with 16 starts last year, he closed sixth in the CACC with four doubles, seventh with 14 hits and 20th with a .462 slugging percentage.  This came after he ended 25th in the league with 59 assists during the 2019 campaign.

Awtry is one of the program's top hitters and looks again to be a key contributor both at catcher and in the infield.  He finished last year sixth in the CACC with a .359 batting average, fourth with a .479 on-base percentage, fourth with a .615 slugging percentage, sixth with four doubles and seventh with 14 hits.

Federici more than impressed with the Swoyersville American League squad, ending with a 1.75 ERA over 16 innings to help his unit reach the Great Lakes Regional.

"Mason, Marshall and Jake all got off to great starts last year, and have each taken their skills to another level during the off-season," Goldey-Beacom head coach Tom Riley said.  "The work ethic they displayed during the summer and fall has really paid off as I expect all three to be major contributors this spring.  As good as they are on the field, these guys are all great teammates and leaders in our program.  As far as Tommy, we knew we were getting a guy with an electric arm when we recruited him, but he has exceeded our expectations in the first month of practice with his self-confidence and maturity.  We expect him to make a big impact this spring."

Goldey-Beacom last year recorded its first 3-0 start in program history against a very-challenging schedule.  The squad notched a victory over Millersville, which in 2019 ended seventh in the nation according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and first in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

GBC closed the year with a shutout win against Le Moyne, ranked fifth in the East Region.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season March 23 with a home doubleheader against Chestnut Hill.
