6/23/2022 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom junior baseball catcher Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE), who already has cemented his legacy among the College's elite, has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Student-Athlete of the Month.

Awtry's honor for May comes after he was picked CACC Player of the Year, CoSIDA Academic All-District and first team All-East Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Conference Commissioner's Association (CCA).  He also is a two-time member CACC Academic Honor Roll.

The importance of Awtry in all facets of the game can not be overstated.  His has come through with many clutch hits for one of the area's top programs and his defense is beyond vital whether with his throws to second or his numerous pickoffs at first base that have erased late-inning runners.

Awtry closed 82nd in the country and first in the CACC with a school-record 14 home runs, fifth in the CACC with 48 RBI, fifth with 64 hits, seventh with a .656 slugging percentage, eighth with 14 doubles, 13th with a .350 batting average and 19th with a .431 on-base percentage.  His 23-game hitting streak earlier this season is a new school record, breaking the old mark of 16.

Plastered all of the program's career record book, Awtry is first with 26 home runs, first with 94 RBI, second with 32 doubles, second with 511 putouts, third with 132 hits, third with 93 runs, fourth with a .311 batting average and sixth with 105 assists.

Community service is part of the award and Awtry has played a big role, helping the Lightning organize a group to take part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation One Walk.  In the last year both the baseball and softball teams participated before the pandemic, they helped the JDRF raise over $200,000.

Also among the Lightning's elite this season, junior shortstop Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) was named first team ABCA All-Region, second team NCBWA and CCA All-Region and first team All-CACC after being picked second team All-CACC and second team ABCA All-Region in 2021.  Sophomore first baseman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) was named second team all-league after being tabbed 2021 first team all-conference and the CACC Rookie of the Year.  Senior pitcher Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) was named second-team all-league a second consecutive year and freshman second baseman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) also was picked second team All-CACC.

Goldey-Beacom (27-25, 18-6 CACC) put forth yet another strong campaign in which it broke the school record for most wins, notched a program-best 17 home victories and had a team-high 16-game home winning streak entering the CACC Tournament.  GBC was ranked ninth in both the NCAA East Region Rankings and the NCBWA East Region Poll following the regular season.

In its just its sixth season and fifth non-Covid campaign, GBC advanced to the CACC Tournament for the third time and this year ended second in the competitive South Division.  This came one year after the squad played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
