9/23/2024 12:00:00 AM

Big wins and outstanding play laid the foundation for four of Goldey-Beacom's student-athletes to receive weekly honors from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) was named Volleyball's Player of the Week, Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) was tabbed the sport's Rookie of the Week, freshman Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkiye) made the sport's Weekly Honor Roll and Sam Ball (Salisbury, MD) was picked Men's Soccer's Rookie of the Week.

Burch had 67 kills, a .444 hitting percentage, 24 blocks and 11 digs over five matches.  She had 18 kills and a .625 hitting percentage Saturday against Kutztown, 14 kills and a .565 percentage Wednesday in Goldey-Beacom's 3-0 victory over Holy Family along with 14 and .429 on Friday at Frostburg State in a 3-2 GBC win.

Burch was picked to the all-tournament team after ending with 53 kills, a .416 hitting percentage, 19 blocks and eight digs over four matches.

Fernandez had 93 digs over five matches, including 23 each match Friday against Edinboro and Frostburg State.  She also notched 22 Saturday versus Kutztown.

Koksal totaled 168 assists over five matches, including 46 on Friday to help Goldey-Beacom rally from two sets down to defeat Frostburg State.  She also had 39 on Saturday against Kutztown.

All of this concluded a 3-2 week in which Goldey-Beacom (6-5, 1-0 CACC) defeated Holy Family for the first time since 2006 and won its league opener for the first time since 2017.

Ball scored twice last week for Goldey-Beacom, including Saturday when his team notched a 2-0 victory at Bridgeport.  The victory was the Lightning's second in their last three contests overall and the first in six meetings against the Purple Knights.

Both teams are in action Tuesday.  The volleyball squad visits Chestnut Hill for a 7:00 pm match and men's soccer is home against Chestnut Hill for a 4:00 pm game.
